Fishing in Fiordaland

Gordy Watson and myself took a crew of mates into Preservation Inlet, the most southern fiord where we met a charter boat. The Jewel skippered by Rob Swale and his crew were on hand to bait hooks clean the catch and prepare the catch for the pot.

Flying down from Queenstown was a experience on it’s own and cruising around the sound was breath taking to say the least.

If you and your friends are looking for something out of the box give us a shout because that is what we do, we like to take you to places where the only people you will see are who you choose. The rest will be some of NZ’s most pristine landscape.

You will get to have a pretty good feed along the way as well as fresh as it comes out of the cold pure waters of southern New Zealand.

Kisby Lodge, this place and area is rich in New Zealands early history. From the gold mining to fishing, sealing, hunting, and stories and locations that will tell the tales of the early Maori explorers to the area.

Myself and Gordy, these machines are the closest thing i know to time travel. The only way in to this place is by water or air unless you have 3-5 days to spend hiking in and out.

When you think fly fishing for trout, i would have to say NZ is near the top of the list as an ultimate destination for Rainbow and Brown Trout.

The best excuse to go back country i reckon is a fishing rod, camera and even a rifle for some venison! Just being in the places we go is special, and to catch a sighted trout on a fly and then release it however big or small is an experience to be remembered.

I love showing people what is sitting on our doorstep and sharing a few stories that go with the place. NZ is a small island at the bottom of the world and at the bottom of that island is the place that i like to hang out in..

Our fly fishing season is nearing an end as the trout prepare to start spawning up into the head waters of what i reckon are the most beautiful rivers in the world!!

The Search for powder. Mt Larkins

6 mill of rain on the ground in Glenorchy was enough for us to expect some powder up on Mt Larkins? Call it an educated guess? At the end of the day we had to go to find out for ourselves.

The result was 1 load of Japanese Snowboarders doing a photo shoot for Burton, and 2 loads of skiers and riders who had the best days riding of their life.

Landing at around 2200m and getting picked up at 1550m gave us some powder and fresh lines to yahoo about until next season…

Peter Simson and his kids Natalia & Oscar do exactly that when they visit Queenstown in the winter. Flying out of the Alpine Choppers hanger with Stefan at the controls and Peter Rasmussan (Lead Guide) and myself on a charter to find Powder in the Mountains not far from town was our mission.

We were straight into it, finding safe lines, as we had recieved new snow over the previous days and snow stability was not the best, and route selection was the key to having a day to remember for the right reasons.

A private charter is the ultimate in Heliskiing, and Alpine Heliski are the guys to talk to when it really counts. If you want the mountains in our back yard to feel like you own them for a day or 2 as well as a helicopter then get in touch with us at Alpine Heliski and see for yourself.

Queenstown has had the coldest and driest months of June and July in its history of recorded weather!! When i am Ski Guiding with Alpine Heliski i often chuckle to myself and think about the spring time when the snow i am skiing on melts and eventually makes it way down into the river systems that sustain all of the Rainbow and Brown Trout we hunt in the Summer time.

I know for a fact that at the bottom of this particular valley where we skiied with Rob Morrison and family and friends there is one such river that is home to some of the best dry fly fishing around.

Once a fisherman, always a fisherman!!
