Dream-waters in our back-yard Kobayashi-san gets some TIGHT-LINES

Yasu Kobayashi from Nagano Japan, stepped up to the plate and delivered some beautiful casts that got instant results.

If there was ever a lesson in casting and playing a fish then Kobayashi-san is the man to watch, and on the river we fished he was definitly the boss.

Using his faithful SCOTT ROD  #5 of 10 years the experience of fishing some dream-waters was made even better….. after 9 years of travelling to N.Z to fish Yasu and Kazu finally made it to the top of Lake Wakatipu, after today it won’t be the last.

Our Work is our Passion, Rainbows and Browns Disagree!

We really do love our work, it is pretty cool to be able to say that and really mean it!! There is more to it then just the fishing, its  more so about being there and seeing the BIG picture. The places we go, the stories that go with them, the opportunities of casting to the biggest wild trout you will ever see (unless you come back) and the ever changing environment we explore.

Sure our job is to guide you to catch fish and teach the different techniques needed from nymphing to dry fly, understanding the local insect life, casting, mending, striking and playing a fish. When you see the rivers that we fish and the valleys, lowlands, gorges, and forests they run through you will understand why we called our-selves Dream-waters and why we LOVE our job!!!!!

Rainbow connections.

Filed under: Fishing Diary — Tags: — Henare @ 1:12 pm

The last 2 weeks of weather have been exact opposites, rain one day, sunshine the next, snow on the tops today. That is what you get when you live on an Island surrounded by ocean currents of different temperatures, add to that the southern alps rising straight out of the ocean and it is the perfect recipe for a mixture of wild weather.

Some people go to an office every day, but when your office is the mountains and hills and the lakes and rivers then the weather plays a major role in what the office is going to look like?

The weather reports sometimes don’t mean a thing until you open the curtains and look out the window when you wake up.

One morning i woke up and looked outside, grabbed Jazz and we made a RAINBOW CONNECTION..

Bob & Suzie Cronholm go fishing for a few hours

Bob and suzie were booked to take the Dart River Jet boat from 12.45pm. We had done a weather check the night before and found our window of opportunity was a morning fishing excursion.

I picked them up from Blanket Bay at 8.30 and we drove 20 minutes to the Routeburn River. There was evidence of the last weather system that went through days earlier as logs some up to 2 tonnes were no longer where i had remembered them and were now 40 -50 metres down river!!

Despite this there were fish to be spotted and we cast at a few with Bob hooking 2 and landing 1, Suzie had a major battle with a good Rainbow and after 15 minutes of moving up and down the run a few times done a mighty run and took the fly with him. It was hard to leave the river but there was a  jet boat to catch and another adventure to live.

That was a half of a day out on some Dream-water making the most of our beautiful country… living the dream..

Early morning mist, Bob and Suzie Cronholm

The Brocks go fishing..

Another family passing the passion of fly fishing on..

We flew to a special high country river that presents a challenge to any fisherman. Flying out across the southern alps is something special that has to be experienced while you are in N.Z. And to land beside a river that is full of rainbow trout is a dream come true.

That is what we did with the brock family from Toronto.. See for yourself what the pictures say..

Scott S4 #5/ Airflow, Airlite Reel/ Airflow Tactical 5wt line………… A very nice combination!!!

I had a couple of hours to spare so was able to get away to one of my favourite rivers and get a feel for the Scott S4. I must admit that as soon as it arrived to my house i was out on the lawn casting and getting a feel for what i had read so much about.

By no means do i consider myself to be an expert in the fly rod world, and i may not have the prettiest cast, but i do know what is required when it comes to the business end fo fly fishing.

The most noticable thing was the weight of the S4, very light with a surprisingly grunty feel about it. Grunty may sound harsh, but there is some power hidden amongst the S4 that with the right timing and power application makes for a very accurate and stealth fly rod.

On the water it was just a joy to throw, in fact who cares if there are no fish around!! any river will do. Needless to say i did get to cast at a fish or two and make the right cast with the right fly to feel the power of the rod and the airlite reel at work. Thats right i also had a Tactical line #5 on board and the whole combination is just magic. I just want to go fishing again and again and again…………

I say this to all my clients and anybody interested in fly fishing and that is, get on the back lawn or sports field and just keep casting that rod. It is the fast track to catching fish, and you will be surprised with who you will meet and the conversations that come from people passing by.

Tight-lines will be the result, have a look at the photos that follow, Scott S4 in one hand Nikon D70s in the other………………………Happy tester in the middle…………..

A Cloudless BLUE sky day………. But The WIND blew hard into your face….

Mark La Noue, out visiting N.Z for the first time from Portland (Oregon) and i paid a visit to a river south of Queenstown and introduced ourselves to some local trout.

The drive reminded Mark of some places in the states, and the fact that he grew up in Denver Colarado made him feel pretty much at home hanging out in Queenstown for a few days.

The sky was blue, however the wind was head on and punchy. Armed with his Sage #6 Mark was able to deliver the right casts to get connected with some brown and rainbow trout.

We were well rewarded putting some fish to the net, but had a solid walk to contend with. Was it worth it……………

You bet it was…………………….

Around here you don’t know what the weather is doing until you look out the window??

The weather Forecast was terrible!!

Wake up in the morning and look out the window and see what it doing is normally the answer!! The rain clouds did not arrive and the blue sky and sun shine did, so off we went for a relaxed afternoon fishing safari. Everything was about perfect, Dale Landon from the San-francisco Bay Area got a taste of some dream-water not to far away from Queenstown, and also got to feel what a healthy local rainbow trout is like to catch.

They don’t give up easily and will put your skills to the test…………Around here the trout is the final Judge!!!

Call it Paradise….call it unbelievable…call it amazing…….we love where we live….

Leo and Marcy, love the great outdoors and made a special trip to New Zealand to fulfill a life long dream to see what it really is like?

We made a flight into one of the most beautiful valleys you could imagine, chasing deer, landing on top of a mountain peak along the way, and then landing beside a dream-river to spend the day sighting and fishing to wild rainbow and brown trout.

I have a funny feeling that this was the first of many visits to Queenstown and N.Z, and am looking forward to sharing it all again…………………….. Henare

The Places a FLY ROD will take you, or is it the places you can take your FLY ROD????

We went to one of those places that makes you feel like you are the only people on the planet. A place where you can drink straight out of the river, and the pools are crystal clear and i think the trout call it Trout Paradise. We went to one of those places not  far away from Queenstown and  hung out with Loren & Jenaya. We cast to some Rainbows,  hooked a couple and pretty much had a magical day that will be hard to forget. Thats what you do when you are in the Wakatipu Basin, hang out and enjoy what we have in our BACK YARD………..
